Gabbing Around Town

Thoughts on Accessibility tools

This week we were joined by Chantelle Morvay-Adams from BCEDAccess. I had never heard of this collective before the presentation. They are a group of parents of students with disabilities. During her presentation, she brought up a few questions I had not considered before. However, there was one point she spoke about that really hit home for me.

Some parents do not want to acknowledge that their child may have a disability. I have a younger brother that really struggled academically. My stepmom did not want to even consider there made be something “wrong” with him. His teachers and family members kept trying to broach the subject of getting some assistance for him. After, too long in my opinion, my stepmom accepted that her son might have a learning disability. Now, he is able to do class level work with some assistance from an EA. Unfortunately, there is still such a stigma about learning disabilities. I truly hope that if I have to have this conversation with one of my student’s parents, that they want to do all they can to help their child.
